California High Tech Corporate Environmental Reports

Publications

  • Clean Computer Campaign Annual Report Card of The Silicon Valley Toxics Coalition. The report card, released in December 2000, grades the companies' performance on 8 key indicators in an effort to answer the following question:--Are high-tech companies providing consumers with enough information to make informed decisions about buying a "green" electronic product?

  • Researchers at Resources for the Future developed a framework to evaluate the novel air permit granted to the Intel Corporation as part of EPA’s Project XL. In their analysis, researchers describe the permit’s impact on environmental quality, production costs, transaction costs, and Intel’s strategic market position.

  • Mazurek, Jan, 1998. Making Microchips: Policy, Globalization, and Economic Restructuring in the Semiconductor Industry
    Cambridge, MA: MIT Press.
Microchips, unlike automobiles, are resource intensive - when sold, they contain very few of the raw materials used to manufacture them. According to Jan Mazurek, "the computer microchip industry's clean outward appearance and clean image tends to eclipse its glaringly poor environmental record." Mazurek's excellently researched work shows how reorganization and relocation of manufacturing facilities divert attention from trends in toxic emissions and how they complicate public and private efforts to improve the industry's environmental performance.

    Email Listserves

  • Campaign for Responsible Technology
CRT is an international network initiated by the Silicon Valley Toxics Coalition. It is a diverse network of organizations and environmental, worker/labor safety and health, economic development and social justice activists who have come together to promote broader grassroots participation in the design and development of new technologies as the high-tech industry races forward into an increasingly dominant global position. We have a list-serve to share experiences, struggles, strategies, and technical information by increasing communication among people who are concerned about the impacts of high-tech development.
